In short: Kounts puts your own photo on the countdown card, and with the Depth effect the day count can sit behind the people and pets in it, like the clock on the Lock Screen. It keeps a full-screen photo gallery for every event (grouped by year for birthdays and other recurring dates) and shows your pictures on Home Screen widgets too. No photo to hand? Take one, or make one with Apple Intelligence. It's free, with no ads.
Your photos, counting down with you
Your photo as the card
Set any picture from your library, or take one with the camera, as a full-screen countdown card. The day count sits over your photo, so a trip counts down over the place and a birthday over a favourite face.
The count behind the people
With the Depth effect, the day count sits behind the people and pets in your photo, like the clock on the Lock Screen. It works with the Classic and Headline styles on your cards and the event screen, and with Premium on share images and the Poster and Featured widgets. It is on for every photo; switch it off in Settings → Card style, or for one photo when you edit its event.
Make a background with Apple Intelligence
Tap the photo chip when you add or edit an event and choose Create image. Image Playground opens with the event's name and category already filled in, and the picture you keep becomes the background. Free, on an iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence.
A photo becomes a countdown
Pick a photo of a poster or an invitation from Create with AI and Kounts reads the name, the place and the date off it, then fills in the form for you. The photo stays on your device. Needs iOS 27 and Apple Intelligence.
Birthdays with faces
Birthdays from Contacts brings in every birthday saved in your contacts at once, each with the person's own contact photo and the age they are turning. Birthday countdowns.
A gallery for every event
Each countdown keeps its own photo gallery. Add as many shots as you like and swipe through them full-screen. The collection grows as the day gets closer.
Memories grouped by year
For birthdays and recurring events, photos are grouped by year, so each occasion builds up a little history you can scroll back through, with last year's party right beside this one.
Photo widgets
Your event's photo can sit behind the day count on the Home and Lock Screen widgets, in several styles and sizes, a picture you glance at every day.
Export to share
Save a countdown card as a high-resolution image to post or send, in story (9:16), square (1:1) and portrait (4:5) sizes, ready for Stories, a square post or a feed.
A shared album
On a shared countdown, everyone you invite can add their own photos to one shared album, so the gallery fills up from every side.
Your year as a photo wall
The Yearly Recap closes on the Memories Wall: a full-screen mosaic of the year you just counted through, built from your own photos and cover art, one tile per event. Tap a tile to fold the wall away onto that event, or share the wall itself as a 9:16 image.
On This Day brings them back
When a countdown you once waited for lands on today's date in an earlier year, it slides in at the top of Upcoming with its own cover art: “2 years ago · Tokyo trip”. Open it for the full memory, or count it down again in one tap.

The Depth effect in the Headline and Classic styles, on an anniversary and a birthday.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put my own photo on a countdown?
Yes. With Kounts you set any photo from your library as the background of a countdown card, full-screen. The day count sits over your picture, so a trip counts down over a shot of the place and a birthday over a favourite portrait. You can swap the photo whenever you like, and the same image can dress the matching Home and Lock Screen widgets.
What is the Depth effect?
The Depth effect puts the day count behind the people and pets in your photo, the way the clock sits behind the subject on the iPhone Lock Screen. Kounts finds them on your device, so the photo never leaves it. It works with the Classic and Headline card styles on your cards and the event screen for free, and with Premium it also shows on share images and on the Poster and Featured widgets. It is on for every photo, and you can turn it off in Settings or for a single photo.
Can Kounts make a background picture for me?
Yes, on an iPhone or iPad with Apple Intelligence. Tap the photo chip on an event and choose Create image: Image Playground opens with the event's name and category already filled in, you pick a style, and the picture you keep becomes the background, on your cards and widgets like any photo. It is free, and works best on iOS 27, where Image Playground can make photo-quality pictures.
Does Kounts keep a photo gallery per event?
Yes. Every event has its own gallery, with room for 3 photos on the free plan and 15 with Premium, and you can swipe through them full-screen. For birthdays and other recurring events the memories are grouped by year, so each occasion builds a little history you can scroll back through as the next date approaches.
Are there photo widgets?
Yes. Kounts widgets can show your event's photo behind the day count on both the Home Screen and the Lock Screen, in several styles and sizes. Pin one event or let a widget auto-follow whatever is next, and your picture comes along with the countdown.
Can I share or export a photo countdown?
Yes. You can export any countdown card as a high-resolution image to post or send in story (9:16), square (1:1) and portrait (4:5) sizes, and on a shared event everyone you invite can add their own photos to one shared album, so the gallery fills up from every side.
Is the photo countdown app free?
Yes. Putting your own photo on a countdown, keeping a gallery per event and adding photo widgets are all part of the free Kounts experience, with no ads. An optional Kounts Premium adds extra card styles and customization, as a yearly subscription or a one-time lifetime purchase.
