How week numbers work

Week numbers follow ISO 8601, the standard used across Europe and in most business calendars: weeks run Monday to Sunday, and week 1 is the week containing the year's first Thursday (the week of January 4). That means the first days of January can belong to the last week of the previous year, and December 29–31 can belong to week 1 of the next.

Most years have 52 numbered weeks; a year that starts on a Thursday — or a leap year starting on a Wednesday — has 53.
